A banner honoring Tamario Smith, who died in a Santa Cruz County Jail cell on May 10, hangs at the clock tower in downtown Santa Cruz. According to Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office in a statement released Thursday, Smith’s cause of death was acute water intoxication due to the over consumption of water in a short period of time. This water consumption led to an electrolyte imbalance, which caused Smith’s organs to fail, leading to his death. Smith’s death was classified as an accident. (Shmuel Thaler — Santa Cruz Sentinel)
